Releasing electronic dub-pop opus ‘Outside The Echo Chamber’, bringing together these longstanding innovators who – after innumerable crossed paths over the past 30 years – finally got into the studio together. Announcing new single ‘Kajra’, it arrives alongside Coldcut’s 30th anniversary tour. Performing a new, cutting-edge audiovisual show, they’ll be using Coldcut-built audio and visual apps to deliver performances touching on their innovative legacy – while facing firmly forward to the future.

This new single ‘Kajra’ (taken from the LP released in May), accompanied by Shobhan Shah’s artwork, is given the full dub and rework treatment in a bumper-pack of mixes. A reimagining of Hindi-Urdu love song ‘Kajra Mohabbat Wala’, it features vocalist Hamsika Iyer (whose credits include Bollywood films and trance act Juno Reactor), recruited and recorded for the track by the late, legendary Mumbai guitarist Babu Choudhary. Seeking to work with something that captured the spirit of Bollywood music, Babu, a friend of Matt Black’s wife who is from Mumbai suggested this track. The single includes an extended 10” mix, a ‘Maximum’ dub, a ‘Cosmic’ dub, an acapella and a remix from psychedelic dub don Ott that’s digi-only. Sherwood reports big reactions to playing it out and the album version was playlisted by Bobby Friction (BBC Asian Network).

Matt Black, recalling how the track came to fruition, says: “It sat on our hard drive for a year until Jon suggested we bring it into the Sherwood sessions. The grandmasters of UK cut ‘n’ paste and founders of the Ninja Tune rebel alliance return with a new cocktail of music, words and images that Black describes as “dissentertainment”. The new EP sees the revival of Ahead Of Our Time, the label name Matt and Jon chose for their first records.

One Coldcut hallmark has been their skill at choosing collaborators, and the “Only Heaven” EP is no exception. First up, they recruited super producer Dave Taylor (Switch / With You.) to work with them. Best known for his stint as Major Lazer with Diplo, Taylor has also produced for M.I.A., Santigold, Beyoncé and many more. The new music here was recorded with him at the Woodshed Studios in Malibu, California. To keep the vibe sharp, Coldcut then brought in some UK vocal muscle in the form of Roots Manuva and Roses Gabor.

The results are, as you’d expect, sensational. “Only Heaven” offers a falling, music-box sadness, soulful and dislocated all at once. Over it, Roots Manuva lays out a trademark stream of consciousness performance, both impassioned and alienated. The beauty here is just how good they make it sound, a kind of anthem for doomed youth as alluring as it is sad. “Creative” gives us something for the dancefloor, a vicious, swinging rhythm, building to an ecstatic finish. “Dreamboats” sees the return of Manuva, this time joined by Gabor for the chorus, all over a crackling, juddering monster of a beat. “Donald’s Wig” is Roses Gabor’s moment to shine and she grabs it – deconstructed d&b, the tune comes over like post-punk spy music with bigger beats. Gabor herself has never sounded better.

This being Coldcut, audio is always combined with visual - and with politics. Cover art is by Kim Rugg a fine artist whose painstaking analog cutup techniques to 'tidy' newspapers meshes perfectly with Coldcut’s own. Astute observers will recognise the samples in her sharp observation on mass media's noise to signal ratio, a small-p political strategy with its roots in William Burrough’s cut-ups. Kim is from the RCA, continuing that institutions tradition of creating provocative pop art covers, and Coldcut have been working with RCA students to re-imagine cultural activism in an ongoing program. The cover art forms the basis of an interactive meme player that can be shared to encourage engagement on positive political causes linked to the content like StopFundingHate.org. Coldcut (Matt Black & Jon More) and Adrian Sherwood – kingpin of the legendary On-U Sound label – are the perfect sonic match; two pioneers of British music united by a maverick spirit. These artists have a deeper intertwined history- On-U Sound is printed in Coldcut’s genes in the music they grew up with. This is something much more special than the average collaboration, and it shows in the result: Coldcut x On-U Sound’s ‘Outside the Echo Chamber’ via Ahead Of Our Time (Coldcut’s first label) – a thrilling sonic adventure, and an album of freshly-minted, electronic dub-pop.

Although Coldcut and Sherwood could have come together at any point in their long, fruitful histories to make a record together, there’d have been no better time to do so than now, in 2017. Uniting an array of global musicians and vocalists including Roots Manuva, Junior Reid, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Ce’Cile – to name but a few – and made in London, Ramsgate, Jamaica, and Los Angeles – where co-producer and fellow dance heavyweight Dave Taylor (Switch & With You.) is now based – ‘Outside the Echo Chamber’ is a timely rallying call for Britain’s musical melting pot.

At the beating heart of this album are some of the most talented players in music’s recent history – long time On-U Sound collaborators Skip McDonald on guitar and bassist Doug Wimbish. These two formed part of the house band for the pioneering rap label Sugar Hill, providing the music for some of the most seminal records of the era like Grandmaster Flash's ‘The Message', and many others.

The trajectories of Coldcut and Adrian Sherwood take in some key moments in U.K. music. Coldcut’s origins are in the fertile hotbed of late ‘80s London, and the pre-commercial dance music that evolved from it. They were ‘the first Brit artists to really get hip-hop’s class-cutup aesthetic,’ introducing rap to ravers, creating a heady blend of hip-hop production aesthetics and proto-acid house grooves, and becoming a precursor for scenes as diverse as electronica, breakbeat and ambient.

Their early 12”s, ‘Say Kids, What Time is It?’ and ‘Beats and Pieces’ changed the face of emergent dance,. A notorious remix of ‘Eric B and Rakim’s ‘Paid in Full’ took their radical sound mainstream, and they introduced Yazz and Lisa Stansfield to the world in a wave of chart success. Their mid 90s 'Journeys by DJ' is regarded by many as the top DJ mix of all time. When their left foot approach found itself at odds with the conservatism of the major label system, they founded the iconic indie label Ninja Tune, which will be 27 years old in 2017, Coldcut themselves celebrate 30 years since their first release in 2017.

For 40 years now, forward-thinking sound scientist and mixologist Adrian Sherwood has been blowing minds and speakers alike. Producer, remixer, and undisputed patriarch of the British dub collective/record label On-U Sound, Sherwood has long been regarded as one of the most innovative and influential artists in contemporary dance and modern reggae music.

First surfacing during the mid ’70s, he formed On-U Sound in 1981. His talent for creating musical space, suspense, sensations and textures have enabled him to pioneer a distinctive fusion of dub, rock, reggae and dance that challenges tradition not only in roots circles, but also in the pop world at large. He’s worked with a dizzying array of legendary artists, including Depeche Mode, Primal Scream, Roots Manuva, Peaking Lights, Einsturzende Neubaten, Ministry, Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails. It could be argued that along with Mad Professor and Dennis Bovell (who produced Black’s earliest work), Sherwood was the key dub musician around. Three decades of relentless work has seen him release three solo albums – the latest in 2012 – and begin an ongoing collaboration with electronic don Pinch.

More important than the individual histories, though, is the one that these two artists share. Long before Coldcut even existed, Jon More and Matt Black were buying On-U Sound releases. “The On-U Sound records were a unique and powerful influence on us,” Black says. More remembers that “the first On-U Sound record I picked up was Prince Far I. I bought it in High Wycombe when I lived there, at Art College in 1979.” Black summarises the influence the collective had on he and More as young men: “Me and my mates used to collect the records, the design of On-U Sound 10 inch black and white sleeves were so cool. Without On-U there would be no Ninja Tune.”

“Jon and I both went to High Wycombe technical college,” Sherwood says. “There was a blues club The Shabeen, Jon and I saw Prince Far I there.” The globally-minded, reggae sound of ‘Outside the Echo Chamber’ has its origins in this period. Sherwood adds, “My school had Pakistani, Indian, Polish, Irish, Italian people. At the time we all liked pop music, soul and the reggae was coming in. Early on I liked the rude ones, Prince Buster, Lee Perry, then the gimmicky ones, then the DJ ones. And then I got into the songs.” More and Black loved reggae from an early age too. “In Thame where I was born, 13 miles from High Wycombe, they had a country fair,” More says, “and that’s where I first heard reggae.” Black had a similar experience: “Mine was Banbury fair,” he says. “They used to have great loud soundsystems!”

These early influences found their way into Coldcut’s own music. “The whole Coldcut mash up thing was partly inspired by On-U,” Black says. “When we made a Go-Go style record ‘Stop That Crazy Thing’ for our first album and put reggae vocalist Junior Reed (who features on ‘Outside the Echo Chamber’) on there, that was the On-U influence. Adrian made connections, he also did a remix of it.” And Coldcut’s pioneering hip-hop made sense to Sherwood too. “I ended up going to NY and staying with Tommy (Silverman, of Tommy Boy) in 1984. I was squatting with Neneh Cherry and Junior Williams at the time. Duke Bootee (The Message), Melle Mel, Krs-1 were all around. NY was really bubbling.”

Hip-hop, like reggae, is at the heart of ‘Outside the Echo Chamber.’ In fact, the Coldcut and On-U vectors meet at the UK’s finest practitioner of the genre, frequent Coldcut collaborator and Ninja stable-mate, Roots Manuva. “He’s one of the leading British poets,” Black says. “His lyrical take is unique, he has that bittersweet thing going on. He’s honest about the nature of existence.” “I was lucky to work on Roots’ last album ‘Bleeds’,” Sherwood adds. “I knew I was working with a great artist.”

This is a properly diverse album. Rodney opens up ‘Outside the Echo Chamber’ with the brilliant ‘Vitals,’ a song that sets out the album’s sonic stall and lays its rebel heart bare. Deep bass, an elephantine groove and reflective coruscating bars. ‘Make Up Your Mind’ feat. Ce’cile is a yearning, rainy day love song, whilst Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Junior Reid and Elan breathe political fire and sonic glee into an exemplary dub in ‘Divide and Rule.’ Elan’s reappearance on ‘Make Up Your Mind’ is a fathoms-deep piece of reggae soul that sticks in the mind, Toddla T provided production assistance on this and also ‘Everyday Another Sanction’. ‘Kajra’ is a masterly rework of an old Hindi-Urdu love song “Kajra Mohabbat Wala”. Dub is a core aesthetic and all tracks have more extreme dub versions that will also surface.

There are sixty years of shared musical experience, culture and knowledge between Coldcut and On-U Sound, every bit of which has been poured into making ‘Outside the Echo Chamber.’ In the bleak political landscape of early 2017, this album’s warmth, and its outward-looking, globally-minded sound couldn’t feel more welcome.

It's the fruit of lifetimes work that has been worth the wait.

‘@0’ AMBIENT COMPILATION FEATURING NEW RECORDINGS FROM RYUICHI SAKAMOTO, SUZANNE CIANI, SIGUR RÓS, STEVE ROACH, KAITLYN AURELIA SMITH, SKEE MASK, HELENA HAUFF, JULIANA BARWICK, A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN, LARAAJI, AND MANY MORE.

The release also includes new compositions and remixes of music by Imogen Heap, James Heather, Specimens, Nailah Hunter, Coldcut and more. I found that ambient music, by making no psychic demands, often opened some space and with its soft fascination, subtly raised the energy, helping to avoid that downward spiral and navigate slowly up and out. @0 is a balance point.”

Several pairs of tracks from the compilation will be released over the coming weeks, partnering a more established name in the world of ambient music alongside a relative newcomer. Out today for ‘EP1’, modular synthesis pioneer Suzanne Ciani’s “Morning Spring” arrives alongside Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s “Mt Baker”, named after the glacier-covered volcano found in the Cascade Mountain range in Washington. This will be followed by ‘EP2’ featuring “The Drift Home” by seminal American ambient composer Steve Roach which will be released alongside “Beethoven 250” an ambient soundscape from acclaimed duo A Winged Victory for the Sullen. The final release, ‘EP3’ will come from legendary Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, with a new live-recording of his 1999 track “Aqua”, originally performed as part of his ‘Playing the Piano for the Isolated’, and James Heather with a new version of “And She Came Home”, with piano re-recorded on a Bosendorfer Grand and additional strings. The final track on the digital release is a reworking of Coldcut and Irresistible Force’s classic 90’s ambient track “Autumn Leaves”.

‘@0’ will be released on Ahead Of Our Time on 19th November (LP, CD and Digital), with a visual version of the CD mix to follow at a later date. From those initial sessions, the record grew to encompass a wider web of musical luminaries, including Afrobeat architects, the late pioneer Tony Allen and Dele Sosimi, legendary L.A. spoken word pioneers The Watts Prophets, and West Papuan activist Benny Wenda.

The album collaborators are as follows:

South Africa sessions:

Yugen Blakrok, Nono Nkoane, Thabang Tabane, Tubatsi Moloi, Gally Ngoveni, Sibusile Xaba, Soundz of the South Collective, DJ Mabheko

London sessions:

Tony Allen, Shabaka Hutchings, Dele Sosimi, Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne, Tamar Osborn, Miles James, Joe Armon-Jones, Afla Sackey, Benny Wenda, The Lani Singers, Eska Mtungwazi, Jungle Drummer, DeeJay Random

Additionally, The Watts Prophets (Los Angeles) and Antibalas (New York) have contributed to the album.

The final product is a future-facing assemblage of influences, drawing connections between different points in a jazz-tipped, soulfully-minded spectrum; it builds outwards, from the solid musical foundations of those first sessions, featuring the likes of Thabang Tabane, esteemed percussionist and son of the legendary Phillip Tabane. On the one hand, there are gqom beats, interlaced with activist chants and and Tony Allen’s live Afrobeat drums; on the other, there are warm, lyrical meditations, aided by horns and keys. The name “Keleketla” means “response”, as in “call-and-response”, a title which speaks to the project’s aim: to build out a shared musical ground, traced across different recording sessions, continents apart.

It all started with Johannesburg’s Keleketla! Library, an independent library and media arts initiative, stocked since its 2008 inception with donated items from the local community. Run by artists and musicians Rangoato Hlasane and Malose Malahlela, they met Ruth Daniels of the charity In Place of War (where a portion of the proceeds from the record will go to) who asked who they would choose for a musical collaboration with South African artists. Ra and Malose named Coldcut. The UK duo responded to the invitation to make a trip to South Africa for the recording sessions (supported by the British Council) and so the story started to grow. The duo had long nurtured an interest in South African jazz, and it was through Mushroom Hour Half Hour co-founder Andrew Curnow, whose label and collective have been part of the vanguard of a new generation of jazz-influenced acts from Jo’Burg and beyond, that they were connected to the players for the sessions.

The main sessions took place at Soweto’s Trackside Studios, where they started a set of songs and settled down to rehearse and record them. Upon returning to the UK, Black and More sought out extra collaborators, setting up sessions with musicians who could expand and re-imagine the album’s horizons. In many cases, this meant building on the sessions in Soweto, such as in ‘Crystallise’, where Tamar Osborn’s sax parts were added to the lyrics that Yugen Blakrok laid down in Trackside. In other cases, they led to new tracks altogether, such as ‘Freedom Groove’, which came out of an off-the-cuff jam between Tony Allen and Matt Black; Allen’s drum part was taken to build a new track, overlaid with fat, battle-cry brass from Antibalas, and a powerful call to freedom from The Watts Prophets in L.A.

Music and politics is a recurring theme on the record, most notably on ‘Future Toyi Toyi’, recorded in Khayelitsha, which features a recording Black and More made of hip-hop activists Soundz of the South, singing a revolutionary chant, referenced in the title, combined with – amongst other elements – a gqom track by Durban producer DJ Mabheko for the single version. Their creation was partly inspired by their experiences with the Keleketla! Library, who held a party during their stay. At the party, they saw the library’s co-founder Hlasane mix a recording of a student chant into a fiery, uptempo moment in his set, sending the crowd into a frenzy. It was a moment where they were reminded of how closely entwined politics and music can be. “It was almost a religious experience,” recalls Black, “to see the effect music could have in galvanising the audience like this.”

Likewise, ‘Papua Merdeka’ centres around a political invocation. Led by Benny Wenda, it’s a call for freedom for the nation of West Papua from Indonesia, which Wenda fled in 2004 after being persecuted by the Indonesian military. He now leads a campaign from his home in Oxford, where the vocals for the track were recorded. Tony Allen, the rhythm behind Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat revolution, recorded the drums, along with Miles James, a guitarist who’s played with Michael Kiwanuka and Yussef Dayes, and who – as the son of an old family friend – featured in a Coldcut video when he was just a year old.

“Keleketla!” is about finding musical connections. Starting with the tight community around the Keleketla! Library, this project has grown out of those closely forged bonds that can develop around music. Recalling the records he was introduced to and friends made while in South Africa, More says, “There’s music lovers everywhere and that’s what we thrive with.” “Keleketla!” is about embracing that call-and-response tradition, and seeing where it takes you.
