Now under the expert control of fellow Ninjas Kevin Foakes, aka Strictly Kev, and Patrick Carpenter, aka PC, the album broke with the past by reflecting a possible future of beats and pieces. Twenty years later, amid the first national lockdown in England, Kev and PC decided to celebrate Kaleidoscope's 20th anniversary by digging through their personal archives for material from the original recording sessions. They found more than they bargained for, compiling versions, alternate mixes, and unreleased ideas into a series of mixes that have now been further refined into the Kaleidoscope Companion and presented alongside the original album on quadruple vinyl.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOpener 'The Ents Go To War' with its brooding arrangement and heavy drums feels stunningly current, as does the hypnotizing dance between bassline and snare on 'Skylark' or the fidgety percussion and airy synthesizers of 'Zoom Zoom'. Sonically, at least, DJ Food's vision of the future wasn't that far off and as Kev remarked when they first released the mixes some of these tracks \"should have never been left in a drawer for two decades.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eElsewhere, the Kaleidoscope Companion throws up plenty of \"hey I know this!\" moments. The big-band-meets-easy-listening 'Hip Operation' was repurposed for the first version of Sukia's 'Feelin' Free' remix while the swirling funk of 'A Strange Walk' was an unreleased version of the same remix that eventually made it onto the Xen Cuts bonus disc. 'Stealth' is an alternate version of the Gentle Cruelty remix of 'The Ageing Young Rebel' (also included on Xen cuts) but with Nordine's vocal replaced by a somber voice mulling the disasters of morbid self-attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e'The Crow (Slow)' stretches out the melodic theme of one of the most recognizable tracks in the DJ Food repertoire, extending it into a soothing soundscape that eventually dissolves into an alternate dub version. At 13 minutes long, 'Quadraplex (A Trip To The Galactic Centre)' is the Companion's meditative piece de resistance, pieced together from various takes of its separate composite tracks. Originally intended for the album, these tracks were instead reworked and cut up into an EP shortly after. Closing this trip into alternate possibilities is 'Boo Hoo', an early, shorter version of 'The Sky At Night' that gently carries the cinematic mood of the album back to now.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs Kev puts it, \"It’s not a new DJ Food album, it’s an old one that never was. Having been a fan of JG's work since the late 80's this was a \r\ndream come true for Strictly Kev who remixed a Foetus track for free, \r\nalongside Amon Tobin on 2002's \u003cem\u003eBlow\u003c\/em\u003e album for Thirlwell, on the \r\nprovision that they collaborate in the future. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe other collaboration comes from London resident Aaron Thomason aka \r\n2econd Class Citizen on the 11 minute plus audio montage, \"Magpie \r\nMusic\". The two met up earlier this year after Kev had raved about \r\nAaron's debut LP \u003cem\u003eA World Without\u003c\/em\u003e on Germany's Equinox label. Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus etc) and The The's Matt Johnson. The latter reprises his vocal on a cover of his own track \"GIANT\", nearly thirty years after its first release. Musical hook-ups include 2econd Class Citizen, who trades sample-attacks with Strictly for the suite of nine tracks that make up the 11 minute \"Magpie Music\", Dr Rubberfunk lends his drumming skills to the opening track, and old DJ Food partner PC and Solid Steel's DK add their own ingredients to the mix.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhile there isn’t a single concept behind the record, certain themes twine their way through the music. In particular, the twin retro-future icons, astronauts and robots, float and bleep their way across the surface of the album, from the Henry Flint cover art onwards. Perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work on the 2000AD comic, Flint gave Kev access to a caché of his personal drawings to colour, as well as creating new work specifically for the project.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePerhaps the biggest surprise of all to those who associate the DJ Food name with the early 90s \u003cem\u003eJazz Brakes\u003c\/em\u003e records is just how heavy \u003cem\u003eThe Search Engine\u003c\/em\u003e is. Styled as a kind of psychedelic rock album made with samplers, Strictly Kev has not been afraid the frug the fuck out, with thundering drum work and fuzz bass perhaps the central muscial signature of the work.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eReflecting Strictly’s work as a designer as well as musician (he had to take the whole of 2010 off from recording while he did all the design for Ninja’s 20th ‘XX’ anniversary) the album comes in a number of formats: regular CD digipak, regular and expanded \/ extended downloads plus a limited comic-sized book with CD and a 7\" flexi-disc of a bonus track.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs for the title, Kev explains that, \u003cem\u003e“the way we live every day is helped by search engines of many shapes and sizes. Accompanying said remix \/\r\n reinterpretation \/ rebirth they sent this communiqué: \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eDJ Food post mash analysis:\u003cbr\u003e\r\nVery pleasing frequencies of neo- SKANKERDELIC RUDE BOY proportion...we \r\nhave removed a little of the ghetto and added a little synapse twist the\r\n cosmic turn here and there...we trust you find it pleasing! \r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nWe have delivered (sigh... such is our want) a 17min MONSTROUS PSYCH \r\nBUBBLE the journey of which brings us joy...HOWEVER part 3 undeniably \r\nhas a certain GROOVE THANG leading us to strongly suspect that it may \r\nvery well have a life outside of the Monstrous enclave (therefore in \r\naddition to the MPB longform we have delivered a separate file).\u003cbr\u003e\r\nOne can certainly foresee it (part 3) functioning perfectly in a club \r\nthat perhaps at present has not yet fully come into existence but \r\nnonetheless signs are easily detectable now in such established AND \r\nperverse places as the INDIE ROCK DISCO that it might not be too long a \r\nwait - the universe is pregnant for the nth time!!\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nSO SHALL IT BE WITH THIS - feed those establishments FOR THIS IS FOOD they will find instantly gratifying!!!!  \r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nIn our ideal world (is there any other ?????) the MPB longform mix \r\n(digital) perfectly splits as a double AA side vinyl (much beloved by \r\nmen of psych \/ classic rock persuasion an um.....intelligent electronica\r\n (sic) for the earth period 91-93) - BURP!\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nTherefore we have ALSO provided the 2 files \/ sides for this to come to pass (should it ALSO be your want!!)\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nIt should also be noted HOWEVER that our preference for the vinyls in \r\nthis period is merely a practical one since we are keen that our message\r\n be preserved in the great pole reversal of this coming period when all \r\nthings magnetic in nature (computer drives etc) will be wiped and LOST -\r\n we request therefore that vinyl stand as testimony for our children's \r\nchildren's children...it is of course your label and MR FOOD your track \r\nso we can only trust you will do as you need for the furtherance of your\r\n credo...\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nIn love and inclination to further pursue such sonic adventures...\u003cbr\u003e\r\nThe Automobile Association \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe couldn't have put it better ourselves. Rounding out the package, \r\nand an exclusive to the download, is Food collaborator \u003cstrong\u003e2econd Class \r\nCitizen\u003c\/strong\u003e's near ambient reworking of \"\u003cstrong\u003eThe Illectrik Hoax\u003c\/strong\u003e\" which was \r\ndebuted at DJ Food's launch party in the \u003cstrong\u003eLondon Planetarium\u003c\/strong\u003e earlier this\r\n year.
