The only sense in \r\ntown?\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRe-drawing and blurring the lines between psychedelia and sci-fi, \r\nbetween art and entertainment, between sound design and melody, Amon \r\nTobin has created the finest, most intense work of his very considerable\r\n career, an extension and refinement of everything he has achieved thus \r\nfar, a crowning achievement in the process that he describes as \r\n“re-ordering the things around me.” \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTobin’s earliest work, in his own words, “took bits of existing music \r\nfrom old records and tried to find new contexts for them.” This led to \r\nalbums like “Bricolage” and “Supermodified” (the clues being in the \r\ntitles). Gradually, though, the samples “got smaller and smaller and \r\nmore processed until they became less about context or reference and \r\nmore like a physical reincarnation of sounds.” This led to the next \r\nstage in Tobin’s development, his last album, “Foley Room,” where he \r\nfollowed a Cage-ian tack and “looked at all sounds as potentially \r\nmusical,” ending up using his own field recordings of lions, wolves, \r\nbees, factories and so on. With “ISAM” Amon started with field \r\nrecordings but then synthesised the sounds and built them into actual \r\nplayable instruments. With these instruments he then created the album. \r\nThe vocals are Amon Tobin's for the first time, synthesised and gender \r\nmodified. “It’s by far the most exciting development in my personal \r\nquest for some control over nature,” Tobin explains. “Anything from a \r\ngrain of found sound to my own voice can be transformed into something \r\nnew.” \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe result is a record of uncharacteristic depth and richness \r\n(intellectual, emotional and aural), one which sets your synapses \r\ncrackling with dread and beauty, reminiscence and speculation, or just \r\nthe pure apprehension of sound, accomplishing most of the hopes and \r\ndreams of dubstep, for instance, without even bothering to limit itself \r\nto having to be dubstep (which isn’t to say it doesn’t have some of the \r\nmost terrifying bass rumbles your sternum will feel this side of Hell). \r\nRarely has a piece of music made the listener feel so completely \r\nimmersed in a new world, with all the strangeness, excitement and, \r\noccasionally, fear that entails. Once you begin listening to “ISAM,” \r\nanything written about it becomes redundant.
